I Prepared for This

I prepared for this:
With silent tears and public outbursts
With sad faces and solemn talks
With half-hopeful prayers and bended knees
With scenarios of befores and afters and muttered
deformations
I prepared for this
Why does it still hurt so much?
I prepared for this:
With subliminal clues to family and close friends
With de-pep talks to all my alter egos
With frantic plans for option Bs, and Cs and Ds
With alternations between seconds-long hopes and
longer lasting hopelessness

I prepared for this:
Why does it still hurt so much?
I prepared for this:
But then I got the news today
The news I had prepared for for more than a quarter
of a year
And it still hurt
Where were all the walls I put up?
The defense pillows I hand-made so carefully
to cushion my fall as I left the room?
Damn it! I prepared for this!
