Hugh McMillan

The Path below the Linden Tree

The moon shimmers,
mercury on the tips of trees
their flowers like stars on earth.
Never such silence:

no traffic no music no chat
just a path of light
from the sky and the
perfume of the lindens

so strong, so evocative
of something in the past,
sweet just beyond touching.
Follow the path to where

it ritually goes,
old gardens, wild woods,
the brain, the soul,
wherever. It’s the road home.
