K.V. Skene

Think Time and Space and

The past is always tense, the future perfect.
Zadie Smith

it’s almost too latethe sky’s graffitied
with contrails power lines
bare branches a webspace for dreams
to sign on and the northwind eager
to grab us by the hair
pull us in

while we examine our lives in reverse
revisit the past condemn
whatever should never have been said done
rehabilitate our ancestors prune
the family tree garnishee
our ghosts
so pale they are and so transparent
so lost without us
they are nothing no one

believes the past can teach us anything
except the old
who have survived it
and even they have wilfully forgotten
how it really was

and we’ve time enough to changespace
enough to rearrange
deckchairs enough
to panic
